Dean Edgar Hey II
(1940 - October 3, 2022)

Dean Edgar Hey II was a professional bass trombonist and professor of music. He played with such groups as Chicago (back when they were just starting as the CTA), the Chicago Art Ensemble and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

He held a doctorate in Computer Generated Sound from Miami University and masters degrees in both performance (USC) and computer science (FIT). At USC he was a friend and roommate of the conductor Michael Tilson Thomas.

He played a great variety of music, from classical to jazz to experimental--notably playing "Charlie, My Boy" as Charleston Heston leapt from his yacht onto one where his band was performing.

He also played "Take the A Train" as the original train was being installed in the Albany Museum. For 53 years he was married to Jill Ward (1941-2023).

He is survived by Jill's sisters, Sandra and Jackie, and by his brothers, Phil and Jerry and sister Lynn. Also surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Damian and Melanie and their two children, Emily and Liam.
